Abstract: While many people of color recognize the role of race and racism in the United States, most Whites do not. This paper investigates how White women perceive the impact of race on various relationships in their lives. Using in-depth interviews with White and Black women in same-race and interracial Black/White heterosexual marriages, I explore how White women perceive race impacting their relationships within marriage, family, friendships, and the workplace. This paper compares White women’s recognition of race compared to Black women and discusses how recognition of race differs (or does not) for White women based on race of spouse.
