"Bars, Taverns, Clubs and DUIs: A County-Level Spatial Analysis of Per-Capita Drinking Establishments and Drunk Driving Arrest Rates" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Criminology (ASC), Los Angeles Convention Center, Los Angeles, CA, Nov 01, 2006 <Not Available>. 2009-11-28 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p126033_index.html>Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: Drawing on the predictions of social disorganization, routine activities, and opportunity theories, empirical research has consistently shown that areas characterized by high concentrations of bars, taverns and nightclubs are more likely to experience higher crime rates than those with low concentrations. However, few studies have focused on the effect of per-capita drinking establishments on alcohol-related crime rates, such as drunk driving (DUI). In this research, we examine the relationship between the density of drinking establishments and DUI arrests at the county level. Further, Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis (Moran’s I) is used to determine the extent to which spatial autocorrelation exists in drunk driving arrest rates and per-capita drinking establishments among counties in the United States. We collected data from several secondary sources including U.S. Census, County Business Patterns, and official police DUI arrest statistics for all counties in the United States in 1990 and 2000. Regression and spatial analysis were performed. Findings are discussed and implications for future research are suggested. |
