Abstract: This paper presents the preliminary analysis of the association of school quality with immigrant status using traditional and new measures, and the association of immigrant status and educational attainment by using standardized test scores. We used the National Educational Longitudinal Study (NELS: 88). Our analysis shows significant associations between school quality and immigrant status and between educational attainment and immigrant status, which encourages further research on the relationships between educational outcomes and school quality for immigrant children.

3. Bass, Katherine. "A Multilevel Analysis of Fear from Stalking: Victim Characteristics and Incident Characteristics Affect on Fear" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association, TBA, New York, New York City, Aug 11, 2007 Online <APPLICATION/PDF>. 2009-11-30 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p184167_index.html>
Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript
Abstract: Legal and academic definitions of stalking require that a victim experience a high level of fear in order to characterize the behaviors as stalking, however little research has examined the causes of fear. Research has shown that women are more likely to be stalked than men and that women are more likely to be fearful than men. This lends the question whether fear from stalking is a result of the gender of the victim or the characteristics of the stalking. In the National Violence Against Women study, stalking incidents are nested within individuals, with some individuals experiencing up to five incidents of stalking. I employ multi-level analysis to determine if fear from stalking is associated with characteristics of the victim (the victim’s gender) or characteristics of the stalking (offender’s gender, type of stalking that occurred). I find that fear from stalking is caused by both victim characteristics and stalking characteristics.

Abstract: Observers often stress that the current wave of terrorist violence is characterized by three attributes: the religious motivation of its perpetrators, their desire to inflict mass casualties and their use of less hierarchical forms of organization than their predecessors. This study investigates other ways in which the current ?Fourth Wave? of terrorism is distinguishable from previous episodes of the phenomenon during the 20th century. Using data derived from the Schmid and Jongman collection and other sources, the analysis discloses inter alia that contemporary terrorist organizations are less ideologically heterogeneous, less numerous and more autonomous ( from state sponsors, political parties and other violent organizations) than groups formed during the 1960s and 1970s.

5. Baybeck, Brady. "The Spatial Characteristics of Homogeneity: Individual Exposure to Agreement and Geography" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the American Political Science Association, Boston Marriott Copley Place, Sheraton Boston & Hynes Convention Center, Boston, Massachusetts, Aug 28, 2002 <Not Available>. 2009-11-30 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p66018_index.html>

Abstract: Political jurisdictions (cities) in metropolitan areas work to reinforce existing patterns of segregation in residential areas, which means that, on average, citizens live in homogeneous places. This homogeneity is multi-dimensional, and can include class, race, partisanship and other measures. Whether or not this homogeneity at the jurisdictional level influences with whom individuals interact is the focus of this paper. The questions I attempt to answer are: Is there a spatial component to homogeneity in a person's political network? Can the existence of homogeneity (defined as agreement) in a person's network be explained by the homogeneity of the place? I utilize the 1996 Indianapolis-St Louis dataset, collected by Huckfeldt and Sprague (2000), and find that, on three measures of homogeneity, only partisan homogeneity - associating with people who support the same party - has a spatial pattern. For the other measures, demographic homogeneity and political agreement, there is no spatial component. This suggests that although individuals may live in homogeneous, segregated cities they do not necessarily isolate themselves with like-minded people of similar demographic backgrounds.
