1. Epstein, Joyce. "A New Model for Comprehensive School Reform: Results of the Partnership Schools-CSR Pilot Study" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association, Atlanta Hilton Hotel, Atlanta, GA, Aug 16, 2003 Online <.PDF>. 2009-11-27 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p106877_index.html>

Abstract: This study reports the first major test of the implementation and results of the Partnership Schools-CSR model for school improvement. The model requires teams of teachers, parents, and community partners to work together plan and implement activities to improve the curriculum, instruction, and family and community involvement to address specific school goals. The pilot school formed five action teams to improve student behavior, test scores in math, reading, and writing, and the involvement of families from diverse cultural groups and implemented numerous activities to address these goals. The resulting program showed evidence of key policy attributes -- specificity, consistency, authority, power, and stability (Desimone, 2002) that explain the successful implementation of other CSR programs. The pilot school also demonstrated essential elements - teamwork, leadership, action plans, implemented activities, evaluation, and networking (Epstein, 2001) that identify high-quality partnership programs. Longitudinal data were collected to compare changes in student achievement on state tests in the pilot school, comparison schools, and district as a whole over three years. Students' test scores in math, reading, and writing improved over time in math, reading, and writing at the pilot school more than at comparison schools. The pilot school closed the gap in test scores between its students and the district as a whole, despite the fact that the district includes several schools in more affluent neighborhoods whose test scores started at a higher level in the base year. The school also reported dramatically fewer students suspended from school and improved student behavior.

Abstract: The purpose of this study lied in examining the possibility of the Web as an interactive medium for public relations and public relations efforts of Korean corporations for building a desirable relationship with the public and reducing negative images by presenting corporate social responsibility (CSR) issues on the Web. The result of this paper analyzing CRS issues presented and interactive features utilized on 100 leading Korean corporations' Web sites shows that the stage of utilizing the Web as an interactive medium by Korean corporations remains rudimentary. In particular, focusing on the difference of Chaebol and non-Chaebol companies with regard to CSR issues and interactivity of the Web, this study reveals that Chaebol companies presented more ethical CSR issues to reduce existing negative images and utilized more interactive features on the Web than non-Chaebol companies. Further, this study revealed that the more CSR issues are presented on the Web, the more interactive features are utilized.

Abstract: There is growing recognition that processes of globalization and liberalization have been characterized by an institutional deficit that needs to be filled by new organizations and instruments associated with standard-setting and the regulation of business. This presentation will examine a variety of approaches that have emerged in recent years that relate to the social, environmental and human rights performance of business. It will consider the potential and limits of various normative and regulatory instruments, and examine how voluntary and legalistic approaches may connect in ways that are mutually reinforcing. Among the initiatives considered are those associated with international law (e.g. Aarhus Convention, OECD Guidelines on Multinational Enterprises); corporate self-regulation and certification (e.g. ISO 14001, SA8000); multi-stakeholder initiatives (e.g. Ethical Trading Initiative and Global Public-Private Partnerships); and global industrial relations (e.g. International Framework Agreements).

5. Somerville, Ian. "Corporate Communication From Economic Bubble to Credit Crunch: Researching, Evaluating, and Reporting CSR in Irish Financial Institutions" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the International Communication Association, Marriott, Chicago, IL, <Not Available>. 2009-11-27 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p299261_index.html>
Publication Type: Session Paper
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to report on recent research which investigates social responsibility disclosure in the banking sector in Ireland. Data on corporate social responsibility (CSR) activity was gathered from two media; the corporate annual reports (2004-08) and the internet websites of 10 Irish banks. The paper uses the findings of this research to explore key issues surrounding the role of communication professionals, and specifically public relations practitioners, in the management of corporate social responsibility (CSR).

Most current definitions of CSR tend to be underpinned by what is usually referred to as stakeholder theory, the idea that a wide range of organisational and social groups should play a role in determining the future direction of the company. It must be said however, that while the stakeholder concept has achieved widespread acceptance arguably much more needs to be done to put it into practice and that public relations can and should play a key role in this task. A key issue this paper will focus on is how PR practitioners can develop more robust methodologies for gathering stakeholder perspectives, assessing stakeholder needs and measuring CSR impacts.

Arguably a second key requirement for putting the stakeholder concept into practice in the management of CSR initiatives is the commitment to report and evaluate stakeholder feedback completely and truthfully and a willingness to engage with and respond to stakeholder needs and concerns. This paper will consider how corporate websites might be more positively utilised in this task and discusses how the adoption and development of interactive resources rather than the current reliance on expositive resources can facilitate this process.
