"Unconventional Identification: An Ethnography of the Mourning of My London Friend, Princess Diana" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the NCA 94th Annual Convention, TBA, San Diego, CA, <Not Available>. 2009-12-05 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p260715_index.html>Publication Type: Invited Paper Abstract: Londoners woke the morning of 31 August 1997 to news that Princess Diana was dead. Those who didn’t identify with Diana were as shocked as her fans, who identified with her on many socio-cultural, political and ideological levels. Drawing on the socio-cultural analysis of civic ritual by French social theorist Émile Durkhiem, this paper presents a ethnographic account of the (F2F) events and online discourses immediately following her death. The author of this paper, a London resident at the time, explicates a dual negotiation with, on one hand, her private identification with Diana, who lived in her neighborhood and, on the other, the vast gap of class difference and national identity. It also looks at blogs and other computer mediated communication commemorating the 10-year anniversary of the death of the People’s Princess to analyze how she has remained inscribed in the hearts of her fans. |
