Abstract: This is a priming study to investigate implicit racial affect among African American students. Clark?s (1963) hypothesis that pro-black pronouncements may reflect a "norm of racial pride" rather than genuinely held feelings is supported.

Abstract: Background and Aims: When we hold and dandle human babies, we sometimes feel that our body and mind get stable and relaxed. According to the empirical observation of the healing effect, we proposed an image work by holding baby dolls instead of real babies. In this study, the effect of the image work, named “Baby image work”, was demonstrated by using volunteers of female students, expected to become mothers eventually.

Methods: 83 female students of the 3rd grade were taken as the subjects. The demonstration was designed as an initial step to hold three kinds of baby dolls, weighing A(500g), B(1,000g) and C(3,000g), respectively. During the exercise, they were instructed to image the situation that “I am holding a real human baby. I am expected to hold it tenderly because the cervix of the baby might be unstable.” Before and after the demonstration, we made a test of Visual Analogy Scale(VAS) to check on the psychological condition of the subjects. After the demonstration, we made several questionnaires about their impressions and estimated the necessary conditions for the most preferable baby doll. As the second step, we investigated the level of relaxation for the most preferable doll by means of bio-feedback temperature on a finger with or without the baby image work.

Key Results: For the first step, the preferable order of the baby doll was C(45%), B(36%) and A(19%), respectively. According to the questionnaire, the preferable order might come from the reason that the weight and the size for the baby doll C associated with the one for the human baby. After the demonstration of the baby image work, the results of VAS test showed that the presence of mind(t=7.16, p<0.01) and the feeling of satisfaction(t=8.65, p<0.01) were improved, while the anxiety(t=7.16, p<0.01) and the depressed feeling(t=8.33, p<0.01) were inhibited. For the second step, the finger temperature increased (t=14.2, p<0.001) after the demonstration. The increase of the skin temperature is generally considered that the subject is under the relaxed condition.

Conclusions: According to these results, the healing effect of baby was explained by the baby image work, and the effect was available not only to the human baby but also to the baby doll.
