Abstract: Jean Racine’s "Phèdre" offers exciting possibilities for student engagement in a high school literature classroom. The play, however, is rarely taught because of the obstacles in developing an effective method for teaching the work. This essay offers a method designed to overcome these obstacles using the concepts of Walter Fisher’s narrative paradigm. Students are encouraged to compare the narratives within the text with their own experiences, using Fisher’s principles of narrative probability and narrative fidelity.
