"Issues and Attitudes on Gender: A Survey of the ISA Membership" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the International Studies Association, Town & Country Resort and Convention Center, San Diego, California, USA, Mar 22, 2006 <Not Available>. 2009-12-02 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p99895_index.html>

Abstract: In 1995, ISA sent out a survey on the effects of gender within the field. The findings indicated that the situation for women in IR had improved, but that there were still issues related to gender that called for attention. Discussion at the last two annual meetings has suggested that the survey should be updated now that ten years have passed. The new questionnaire consists of 41 closed-ended questions and one general open-ended question. ISA headquarters is currently sending out the questionnaire and selecting a random sample of members who will be contacted and followed up for the purpose of seeking generalizability. This paper will report statistical summaries of the closed-ended items and analyze patterns on key issues. Comparisons of the response of the population (ISA membership) and the random sample will also be reported. The open-ended question is likely to be very informative, albeit it in an anecdotal and non-scientific way.

Abstract: Professional associations in academia organize fields of research and their reproduction. They provide venues for communication enabling the exchange of ideas that define disciplines, facilitate networks of scholars who jointly constitute the professorial body that makes up a field, and become the public face of the discipline in interactions with those on the outside, including practitioners and critics. In many ways, professional associations help constitute the very essence of a discipline, giving it an identity. They thus are much more than organizations with a particular structure and a defined goal. They are key sites for discursive engagements that participate in the production of a discipline and its boundaries. Because of their constitutive force, professional associations are a particularly interesting site for investigating the role of gender in the reproduction of academic disciplines. This paper focuses on the status and role of women in the International Studies Association (ISA), the premier professional organization in the field of International Studies.
