| 3. Souza, Elizabeth. "Whose Empty Nest? Gender and the College Launch" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association, Hilton San Francisco & Renaissance Parc 55 Hotel, San Francisco, CA,, Aug 14, 2004 <Not Available>. 2009-12-02 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p110232_index.html>Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Review Method: Peer Reviewed Abstract: Persistent gender norms continue to link mothers with child-rearing and fathers with breadwinning, with implications for how people anticipate the ‘empty nest.’ This paper finds that mothers, fathers and children predict mothers will have a difficult time as their children begin leaving home for college, conforming to cultural expectations of maternal behavior. However, it also finds those predictions are mistaken; it is fathers who are more likely to experience this transition adversely. Several reasons are offered to explain this outcome, including the ways in which parents prepare (or do not prepare, in the case of fathers) for the transition; the character of parent-child relations; fathers’ and mothers’ divergent experiences of paid labor, and maternal relief from the domestic burden associated with child-rearing. While fathers associate their children’s departure with loss of the protector role and loss of their children’s companionship, mothers associate it with reduced tension and gain of flexibility and leisure. |

| 4. Kaltenthaler, Karl. "Public Attitudes since the Launch of the Euro" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the ISA's 49th ANNUAL CONVENTION, BRIDGING MULTIPLE DIVIDES, Hilton San Francisco, SAN FRANCISCO, CA, USA, Mar 26, 2008 <Not Available>. 2009-12-02 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p251850_index.html>Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: Using public opinion data from various Eurobarometer surveys, this paper seeks to determine the sources of individual-level support or opposition to a common European currency. The study develops a series of explanations, economic-utilitarian, political-ideational, and cognitive, to determine which best explains the variation we see among European Union citizens in their support for the European Monetary Union project. Another important aim of the study is to asses whether these models explain support and opposition to the common currency before and after its launch. It is possible that the calculus of support and opposition is different for citizens when they think about the common currency in the abstract and when they experience its affects first-hand. |
