Abstract: This research is based on mentoring relationships and communication in academia. The main goal was to establish valid and reliable indicators that measure perceived mentor functions and protégé initiation strategies. Based on confirmatory factor analyses of protégé responses (n=149), eight dimensions of perceived mentor functions were generated (sponsorship, coaching, protection, challenging work, exposure/visibility, counseling, friendship, and acceptance) and ten initiation strategies (ensure contact, similar, seek counsel, direct request, assist with work, competence, assume it will happen, concede control, venerate, and disclose). Implications and future directions for research regarding academic mentoring are discussed.
