1. Ni, Lan. "Relationships as Organizational Resources: Examining Public Relations Impact through its Connection with Organizational Strategies" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the International Communication Association, Dresden International Congress Centre, Dresden, Germany, Online <PDF>. 2009-12-05 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p90585_index.html>
Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript
Abstract: This study examined public relations impact through its connections with organizational strategies. Linking the resource-based view (RBV) from strategy literature with relationship management theory in public relations, the study explored relationships as organizational resources and examined their contribution to strategy implementation.
Thirty-two interviews were conducted with both public relations managers and strategy managers in China. Findings supported major theoretical propositions. Relationships were found to possess key features identified in literature for resources that lead to competitive advantages: valuable, rare, difficult to imitate, and hard to be substituted. Findings suggested that relationships contributed to strategy implementation in general. More specifically, relationships were also used to achieve a fit with different strategies, another key assumption in RBV.
Drawing on the paired input from public relations and strategic planning, this study empirically examined the oft-ignored link between these functions, thus contributing to the understanding in public relations value, strategic management, and relationship development.

2. Myers, Karen. "The Role of Family Communication on Organizational Knowledge and Organizational Assimilation: A Case Study" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the International Communication Association, Marriott Hotel, San Diego, CA, May 27, 2003 Online <.PDF>. 2009-12-05 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p112192_index.html>
Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript
Review Method: Peer Reviewed
Abstract: The purpose of this case study was to examine the effect of family communication on organizational knowledge and organizational assimilation. Firefighters (N=181) were surveyed in a large city in the western United States comparing assimilation and organizational knowledge levels for those with family members in the organization to those who did not have family in the organization. A structural model indicated that family communication’s impact on organizational assimilation was not mediated through organizational knowledge, however, family communication was a predictor of assimilation while tenure was not. These findings point to a need for further research on the impact of family communication on assimilation into particular organizations. The paper concludes with theoretical implications related to predictors of organizational assimilation.

Abstract: Organizations provide areas for anonymous communication to flourish and anonymity is becoming increasingly common in the workplace. Nevertheless, little is known about how the receivers of such communication are affected and how their perceptions change about the source of the communication. Simply state, anonymous communication is an often used, but rarely studied phenomenon. Many factors, some unique to the organizational setting, influence how an organizational member perceives anonymous communication. This paper reviews current research concerning anonymous communication and offers ideas for future research to help to further our understanding of how anonymous communication is perceived by organizational members.

"Organizational Responses to Consumer Complaints: A Re-examination of the Impact of Organizational Messages in Response to Service and Product-based Failures" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the NCA 94th Annual Convention, TBA, San Diego, CA, Nov 20, 2008 Online <PDF>. 2009-12-05 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p255266_index.html>
Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript
Abstract: In a recent investigation of consumer complaining, Bolkan and Daly (2007) found that consumer complaints were mitigated by both organizational response types (excuses, justifications, and apologies) and their components (believability, appropriateness, consideration, and accepting responsibility). What remained to be explained was if organizations’ remediation tactics differed in the minds of consumers of services and products. The current study sought to determine if consumers of services and products differ in their perceptions of organizational remediation messages.
