Abstract: A pretest, posttest comparison group design was used to assess the effectiveness of a health communication campaign targeting school-based workers cognitions about asthma. Messages derived from persuasion theory were embedded into print media that were disseminated by mail. Controlling for several possible confounding variables, mean comparisons suggest that the school materials significantly increased the perceptual mechanisms that forecast health-related behavior change according to the extended parallel process model (EPPM). Measures of asthma knowledge also rose significantly. These results suggest that the intervention can be used effectively to alter key perceptual and knowledge factors that have the power to create healthier school environments.
