1. Beale, Linda. "To Pay or Not to Pay: Taxpayer Elections and the Integrity of the Tax System" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the The Law and Society Association, Hilton Bonaventure, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, May 27, 2008 <Not Available>. 2009-11-28 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p237067_index.html>
Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript
Abstract: This paper will review the types of elections permitted under the Internal Revenue Code, in particular those affecting individual taxpayers and partnerships, and set the question of choices in the context of a theory of a coherent tax system. It will argue that elections are, in almost all cases, not a good idea practically and not appropriate normatively.

"A Longitudinal Assessment of Whether Bad Pay Causes Occupations to Feminize or Feminization Lowers Pay" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association, Hilton San Francisco & Renaissance Parc 55 Hotel, San Francisco, CA,, Aug 14, 2004 Online <.PDF>. 2009-11-28 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p108530_index.html>

Abstract: We use longitudinal data from the 1983-2001 CPS files with detailed occupations to examine the causal relationship between sex composition and wages, testing devaluation and queuing perspectives. We use lagged-Y-regressor cross-lag panel models, as well as first-difference fixed-effects and pooled fixed-effects models. We conclude that while there is a relationship between occupations' sex composition and wages, there is little evidence that changes in the present period changes in one produce changes in the other. The relationship seems to be institutional inertia from an early causal dynamic.

3. Isaacson, Ryan. "Paying for Their Sins, Paying for Their Stupidity: Political Awareness, Accountability, and Corruption" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the The Midwest Political Science Association, Palmer House Hilton, Chicago, Illinois, Apr 20, 2006 <Not Available>. 2009-11-28 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p138667_index.html>
Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript
Abstract: Previous research on the effect of electoral institutions on levels of corruption relies on a story of accountability (Persson and Tabellini 2003); majoritarian electoral rules are said to offer voters the ability to keep their elected officials accountable, while proportional representation systems sacrifice accountability for representation. This paper offers an empirical test of the accountability story by interacting majoritarian electoral rules with political awareness. Results of a weighted least squares regression support the previously untested causal mechanism; majoritarian electoral rules offer politically aware populaces the ability to hold corrupt officials accountable, while this effect is not observed in systems of proportional representation. These results are tempered, though, by a simulation that does not show a significant difference between electoral systems at theoretically important levels of political awareness.

"Pay Now or Pay Later: The Present-Future Duality in Organizational Communication" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the NCA 93rd Annual Convention, TBA, Chicago, IL, Nov 15, 2007 Online <PDF>. 2009-11-28 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p195061_index.html>

Abstract: Implicit in fundamental theories of organization regarding issues of change, adaptation, and learning is a present-future duality which organizational members must face—members’ need to function in the present while preparing for the future. Drawing on McPhee and Zaug’s (2000) communication flows, this paper explores how three specific communicative practices—proactive information sharing, use of real-time information, and collective reflexivity—help organizational members balance the present and the future and reduce delays in organizational adaptation.
