Abstract: The small group of men at a large Midwest grain plant underwent a character change during a prolonged economic and managerial crisis in the 1980s. They were compelled to reconnect to their work and with one another. Enabling this was the formation of a culture where pride and humility operate as a balanced resource. Today, the character type is at odds with more common portraits of working class culture. It is a product of post-industrial economics and may be more common than we think.

3. Wagner, Venise. Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript
Abstract: In 1923, Delilah Beasley became a regular columnist for the Oakland Tribune and the first African American woman to write for a mainstream (White) daily. “Activities Among Negroes” showcased the inner workings of the East Bay region’s black middle class, and as result promoted interracial understanding between Blacks and Whites, as Beasley transferred the Black press’ journalistic style of advocacy to a mainstream paper. Beasley’s work often drew the attention of prominent whites to African American issues in the San Francisco Bay area and, in some cases, in the nation. This paper examines the larger community’s response to her work and the bridges it helped create between Oakland’s segregated worlds. This examination adds to present day discussions about the role of diversity in mainstream media and its effects in developing understanding between ethnic and racial communities and people of different cultural backgrounds.

5. Turpin, Paul. "Equipment for Living: Talking of Love and Loving Talk in Phaedrus and Pride and Prejudice" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the NCA 93rd Annual Convention, TBA, Chicago, IL, Nov 15, 2007 Online <PDF>. 2009-11-24 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p194522_index.html>
Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript
Abstract: Burke's description of literature as "equipment for living" is a warrant for reflecting on the relation between speech and love expressed in Plato's Phaedrus and Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, comparing Plato's speeches on love and Austen's portrayal of marriage proposals. Stanley Cavell's concept of remarriage helps to account for Austen's treatment of love as an intimacy of talk between equals, distinguishing it from Plato's love of teacher for student.
