1. Kane, Stephanie. "The Inquietude of Submarine Man and the Counter-geographies of Globalization: Buenos Aires Stencil Art" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the ASC Annual Meeting, St. Louis Adam's Mark, St. Louis, Missouri, Nov 12, 2008 Online <PDF>. 2009-11-26 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p269261_index.html>

Abstract: Persons unknown driven by whimsy and protest paint the walls and streets that channel diverse passersby, and in the process challenge the taken-for-granted hierarchical ordering of public culture in the dynamic port city of Buenos Aires. Disembodied by the necessities of their illegal performance, the stencillers leave visible material signs whose repetition, juxtaposition and imageric ingenuity is made possible by simple technologies designed to withstand contests with time and removal workers. The stencils seem to break through the combined sense of tentative normalcy tinged with despair that pervades this city on the brink. Anomie is organized into and energized by a variety of subgenres or discursive currents tied to social groups, interventions, and perspectives. This semiotic analysis is based on a collection of over 300 individual stencils photographed during ethnographic fieldwork in 2007. I  will focus on the public street as a global stage, produced in counterpoint to other spatialized nodes of globalization such as container shipping ports; by contrast, these are zones which have been all but cut off from the city’s everyday life and emptied of all but multinational corporate signifiers through privatization and surveillance.

2. Rolf, James. and Swetz, Kimberly. "Modeling the Buoyancy Properties of Virginia Class Submarines" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the The Mathematical Association of America MathFest, TBA, Madison, Wisconsin, Jul 28, 2008 <Not Available>. 2009-11-26 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p275677_index.html>
Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript
Abstract: We describe a group project used in an Integral Calculus course that asked the students to explore the buoyancy properties of a Virginia Class Submarine. Specific topics explored in the project include the concept of neutral buoyancy, the development of a differential equation model of the diving capabilities of the submarine, and the computation of terminal velocity encountered when diving. We will demonstrate technology that provided a quick method for numerically solving the differential equation model and enabled students to easily change parameters that influenced the submarine dive. Finally, we will discuss student and instructor reaction to the project.
