1. Yoon, Jeongkoo. "Does My Boss Walk the Vision Talk? :The Role of Managers¡¯ Vision Crafting and Self-Sacrificing in Team Effectiveness" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association, Atlanta Hilton Hotel, Atlanta, GA, Aug 16, 2003 Online <.PDF>. 2009-12-05 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p107810_index.html>

Abstract: This study investigates how a managerial practice ¡°Walk the talk¡± enhances group effectiveness in the team organization. Walk the talk is a leadership strategy in which a team leader demonstrates the leadership consistency between cognitive and behavioral assurance for the team members. Vision articulation is a cognitive leadership component instantiating ¡®the talk part¡± whereas self-sacrifice is a behavioral leadership component instantiating the ¡°walk¡± part. This study predicts that the consistency between the two will be instrumental in enhancing team effectiveness such as team innovativeness, team efficacy, and team performance. The study also predicts that the collective orientation among team members will increase the leader¡¯s influence through vision and sacrifice on the same dimensions of team effectiveness. The hypotheses were tested with a Korean sample of teams (n=43) and their members (n=311). Overall, the results support the first hypothesis. Yet, the collectivistic orientation directly increases some team effectiveness without any moderation of vision and sacrifice. We discuss the cross-cultural implications of these findings.
