Abstract: The paper presents a synthesis of research on cognitive and emotional effects of television structural features. Both theoretical and practical reasons for reviewing this area are discussed. The paper reviewed the theoretical models and frameworks that are often used to guide research on this area. Both television visual and audio features are considered. The main visual techniques which received much interest in literature are the use of pictures/videos, emotional/negative pictures, editing pace, number of edits, redundancy, camera angles, graphics, color versus black and white images, and still versus motion pictures. In addition, studies have examined the emotional and cognitive effects of audio techniques such as narration style, music, silence, and sound effects. The literature included some contradictory results regarding the cognitive and emotional effects of these structural features. The paper presents some possible explanation for some of these contradicting results. Suggestions for future research are discussed.
