Abstract: The Women and Depression Project began in 1994 within a Finnish national research program. Guided self-help groups were incorporated as a therapeutic intervention into mental health clinics. Through a gender lens, the paper explores the effect of group participation on depressed women's 'individual' and 'social' feelings over three time periods. We analyze quantitative data from the feelings questions on Questionnaires 1, 2 and 3 and qualitative data from the question, ’Has the group helped you to create changes in your life?'. The Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-ranks z-test was applied to the quantitative data to statistically assess between the time periods. Analysis allowed us to respond to three questions: 1) Was there a significant difference in members’ feelings from pre to post group?; 2) Was there a significant difference in members' feelings from pre group to follow up? and 3) Was there a significant difference in members' feelings post group to follow up? Responses to the open-ended question generated qualitative data which was mainly descriptive, an important contribution considering the paucity of information on depressed women. Through group participation, members were empowered to understand themselves and believe in their potential as social individuals. In the long term, sharing in the group altered feelings as well as how members related to themselves and their environment. The findings advance, albeit in a small way, an understanding of how depression is accepted, managed or healed as the public and private boundaries of depressed women's affective lives are broken down.
