"The West Indian Image in the Black Mind: Images of Diversity in Black Print Culture after the Civil Rights Movement" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the Midwest Political Science Association 67th Annual National Conference, The Palmer House Hilton, Chicago, IL, <Not Available>. 2009-11-28 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p361995_index.html>Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: Our goal in this paper is to fill the void in representations of West Indians in black-controlled media from 1965-2000. Following recent studies in the American politics subfield that have used content analysis of black-owned newspapers as a bellwether of public opinion about minority and marginalized populations within the black community, we examine representations of West Indians in articles published in four of these newspapers between 1965 and 2000. While we remain far away from understanding the long-term effects of this type of social differentiation among blacks on the ground, it is clear that the new black immigrants make it more difficult to paint with broad brush strokes about the role that race plays in structuring the life chances of black Americans. |
