"Utilizing Factor Analysis to Examine High School Students’ Academic Motivation" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the MWERA Annual Meeting, Westin Great Southern Hotel, Columbus, Ohio, Oct 15, 2008 Online <PDF>. 2009-11-25 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p273773_index.html>Publication Type: Paper Presentation Abstract: This paper evaluates a 22-item scale utilized to measure the 4 sub-dimensions of high school students’ academic motivation, and reports results of an initial investigation into the performance of the items within their own sub-dimensions. We selected these 22 items from Academic Self-Regulation Questionnaire (SRQ-A), a widely used scale for academic motivation in the field. Investigation into the sub-dimensions of the scale employing confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses revealed that the 22 items did not have a clear 4 sub-dimensions as proposed in previous research. Results suggest that the 4 sub-dimensions would emerge if we drop some of the low-loading items. In addition, since the scale was first used in the population of high school students, the unfit model challenges the previous theory that there are 4 sub-dimensions for the academic motivation. Further study may be needed to examine this issue for high school students. |
