Abstract: A large formal and empirical literature exists analyzing strategic voting. However, conceptual and empirical controversy remains. This paper addresses two gaps that currently exist in the literature. Using a panel study from the Mexican 2006 presidential elections, we distinguish strategic voters from persuaded and bandwagon voters, providing estimates of the size of each group. Additionally, we estimate the sociodemographic and political determinants of strategic voting with an individual-level model that accounts for the possible misclassification of strategic voters, thus rendering consistent coefficients. The results illuminate how political persuasion takes place during presidential campaigns and enable a better understanding of how strategic considerations shape party systems in presidential democracies. |
