Abstract: Research on divorce, remarriage, and single parenthood has generally either failed to note the importance of prospective stepchildren for forming new unions or has only considered it from the point of view of the mothers. Our analysis focuses on understanding variation in answers to a unique question asked of both unmarried men and woman about one’s willingness to marry a partner who already has children. Results indicate that women, those with a disrupted childhood family structure, and those with children themselves are more willing to stepparent.
